Our Free Font Friday series profiles the design characteristics of today’s free downloadable typefaces.
Yusei Magic is a handwritten display typeface created by Tanukizamurai. Its letterforms were written with a permanent marker, but surprisingly, there is some notable contrast between vertical and horizontal strokes which lends it increased legibility.
The negative spaces in its letterforms are also nice and open, a quality other bold display types seem to struggle with.
Its rounded letterforms feel well balanced and soft while still maintaining their structure and neat presentation. It has a friendly, approachable feel that is well suited for anything that needs a subtle humanistic touch.
Communicating values and establishing trust through design is no easy task, and subtle choices in font can go a long way toward making people feel comfortable.
Yusei Magic works nicely alongside a sans serif and would be a great choice for something like a blog, pull quotes from an interview, or hero images for a service-based site. Its letterforms are bold and honest, and their handwritten look is somewhat reminiscent of comic books, which scores some additional points for the nostalgia factor.
Yusei Magic is available in a single weight in both Latin and Japanese alphabets with JIS Level 1 & 2 Kanji as well as the IBM extended set. You can find it for free here.
