Exploring the Artistry of Filmmaking

by Lauren Hernandez | February 21, 2025
From what we’ve seen so far, Jaye’s all-round talent might just help him realize his longstanding ambition of producing live action theater for the stage.
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about your previous experience in film as a stunt double?
I was introduced to the world of stunts and stunt performing at Six Flags America in Largo, Maryland. Until then, my focus was on acrobatics, graphic design, and skateboarding. I produced, directed, and co-wrote a live-action stunt show during my sixth year there. That experience and the enthusiastic response from the audience inspired me to focus exclusively on my stunt career. Several years later, I was chosen as part of the opening cast for a live stunt show called The Pirates Dinner Adventure Show that was new to southern California.
The Pirates Dinner Adventure Show allowed me to meet other stunt performers working in film and TV. At first, I worked multiple non-union background jobs. In a couple of years, I was hired to perform on a union television show. That allowed me to join SAG-AFTRA, the Screen Actors Guild, by way of Taft Hartley. In the early stages of my union membership, I took specialty-extra jobs to build relationships with stunt coordinators. I coordinated many student films over the years to gain experience and credits. I never stopped training and I never stopped hustling.
Q: What inspired you to pursue a course in filmmaking?
The artistry behind it all. Throughout my performing career, I have desired to tell my own stories. These stories always included elaborate action scenes and fight choreography. A close friend and mentor kept asking me, “What is the reason for all the action?” I didn’t have an answer, so I decided to learn as much as I could about filmmaking, so that I could learn how to motivate this action and share these stories.
Q: As a filmmaking student, what is it like to juggle multiple roles, such as cinematographer, director, and editor?
It has made me very aware of and grateful for all the people involved in making a film or TV show and the importance of communicating with each individual department. Ultimately, I am humbled and incredibly fulfilled. It wasn’t easy at times to set up my lighting, adjust my exposure, direct my talent, and consider how my project would be edited together.
I was very uncomfortable at times, but that’s when growth happens—when we learn to progress through uncomfortable, challenging situations. I could manage each role effectively as long as I kept my plans simple.
Q: How has stepping outside your comfort zone benefited your filmmaking?
It has taught me to focus on the objective and it’s given me confidence. There were assignments that I wasn’t sure how I’d complete, but I had the desire, and I was determined to find my story and my shots. Despite my self-doubt and insecurities, I had to take advantage of the time I did have. I had to realize that whatever problem presented itself in these class assignments could also present itself in a professional feature film or a TV show, and there was no room for excuses!
Q: What are the advantages of studying filmmaking online?
The advantage of studying film online is convenience. I can access the course material on any device whenever it suits me. I have the freedom to read ahead on future assignments. And I could work (depending on the assignment) as early or late as needed. My classroom environments included coffee shops, living rooms, parks, cars, and so on. And as a father of three kids, this feature was much appreciated!

Q: How has feedback from instructors shaped your work?
The feedback from my instructors has been uplifting, encouraging, and open-minded. None of my instructors wanted to hinder their students’ creativity, so I was always given a different suggestion to consider for my next assignment. When I was completely confused, my instructors invited me to contact them with my concerns. They were more than willing to help each student succeed.
Q: What are your goals as a filmmaker or creative person in general?
As a filmmaker and a creative, I aim to emphasize artistry and showcase my perspective on humanity. I want to achieve this successfully in many different genres. I was and still am in awe of a film or television show’s ability to remove you from reality. Yet, the topics presented or the dialogue given affect each viewer differently. Aside from filmmaking, I have a love for live theater. I want to write, direct, and produce several live action theater show experiences, which could highlight the art of live theater, and provide a stepping stone for those looking to transition from live shows to on-screen performance.
