New Programs Provide Cinematic Training For Digital Content Creators

TEMPE, AZ (September 16, 2024).

Film program press release

Sessions College announces the launch of two exciting new online programs in Filmmaking and Digital Media, and Undergraduate Certificate program, and an Associate Degree in Digital Media with an emphasis in Filmmaking.

In July 2024, the college received approval to enroll students in a new Undergraduate Certificate in Filmmaking and Digital Media program. Developed through a collaboration between Sessions College faculty members that include André Robert Lee, Valeriya Golovina, Tim Kirkman, and Natalie La Scala, and online filmmaking educators/learning platform Smashcut, the program is a practical introduction to the art of filmmaking.

In the fully online program, completed in two semesters on a full-time schedule, students explore hands-on filmmaking projects, acting in different class projects as a cinematographer, screenwriter, director, and editor, and receiving mentoring and feedback from professional faculty members through the program.

The goal of the program is that students gain hands-on experience of the filmmaking process, learning how to start with an idea, develop a screenplay and production plan, fulfill the role of director, cast and lead a team, and much more. By the end of the program, students are expected to produce a 10-minute movie as a final project.

One innovative aspect of the program is that a Filmmaking Concepts for Digital Media class explores how the language of filmmaking and cinematic storytelling can be applied to creating content for today's digital media platforms. By learning how to translate filmmaking techniques to projects for social platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and Twitch, the program aims to empower online marketers, influencers, and content creators who are searching for new ways to create more effective content.

On Sept 10, 2024, Sessions College add a 12-credit Filmmaking track to its existing Associate of Occupational Studies (AOS) in Digital Media program. With this addition, film students can pursue this area of focus at certificate or degree level. Moreoever, the new Filmmaking track provides an option for Undergraduate Certificate students to continue their studies, transfer credits earned, and earn a degree with a range of financial aid options available.
